The world Greece and Rome made

Our ancient and classical world tours follow Greece and Rome across their far-reaching worlds. In Athens we stand beneath the Parthenon, while elsewhere in Greece we explore Bronze Age sites and the birthplace of the ancient Olympics. In Campania we walk the streets of Pompeii and Herculaneum, preserved by the eruption of AD 79 and revealing ordinary Roman life as almost nowhere else does. We follow Rome out to its frontiers, through the four centuries of Roman Britain and on to Algeria, where Timgad preserves the streets and buildings of a Roman colonial town. And along the North African coast we reach Carthage, whose rivalry with Rome helped shape the ancient Mediterranean.

You travel with expert Guide Lecturers, archaeologists and historians who research and excavate in these places, love sharing what they know, and bring to life how Roman rule shaped the provinces and the people who lived there.

Walk the streets and stand beneath the temples of civilisations whose ideas about beauty, power and public life still resonate today.

Pompeii, Herculaneum & Classical Campania

Pompeii, Herculaneum & Classical Campania

There’s still time to discover in 2026. Selected departures are still available – simply call 1-800-759-7715 to find out more. Learn more about Pompeii at the recently excavated villas. Nowhere in the world could give a deeper insight into Roman life than the dramatic seaside towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Before the eruption of Vesuvius, these were thriving, lively seaside towns – Pompeii, a trading town equipped with many bars, shops and brothels, while Herculaneum was an affluent elegant town. All this came to an abrupt halt, however, one autumnal day in AD 79 when Vesuvius, which had done little more than rumble for years, erupted with cataclysmic force. Two thousand years later, the sites of the Bay of Naples confront the modern visitor with a vivid, haunting immediacy like nothing else in the ancient world. In some cases, we even know the names, professions and personal histories of the people who owned the villas and shops we visit, with our expert guide lecturer illuminating the ordinary people of Pompeii, Herculaneum and beyond. This is an exciting time for visitors to these Vesuvian towns, as new discoveries are constantly being made and new houses constantly opened up. Lose yourself in the past, walking the ancient streets in the footsteps of gladiators, slaves, senators and citizens.

Rome

There’s still time to discover in 2026. Selected departures are still available – simply call 1-800-759-7715 to find out more. Rome is one of the most charismatic and engaging of the great cities of the world, her monuments an omnipresent testament to a past in which she controlled an empire reaching from Scotland to Syria. Surprisingly, it is also an intimate city – the historic centre is small and it is easy to understand based on the ancient layout. This tour is the perfect introduction to the ‘Eternal City’ in the company of archaeologist and historians who illuminate the triumphs, tragedies and political intrigue that characterised the Roman Empire.

Essential Etruscans

Essential Etruscans

The Etruscans are one of the great forgotten civilisations. Conquest by the Romans meant that the Etruscans only appeared as incidental participants in early histories, but they had in fact flourished throughout the first millennium BCE in a group of prosperous city states which were sophisticated, cosmopolitan and influential. Their settlements, their artefacts and even their cemeteries testify to this and as we travel through the lovely countryside of Tuscany and northern Lazio, the Etruscans are abundantly on show, if you know where to look.

Ancient and classical tours: your questions answered

Not at all. These tours suit everyone from the merely curious to scholars and academics, and everyone in between. If you have read widely you will find plenty to discuss, and if you have not, the specialists travelling with you build up a picture during the holiday, and their role is to really help you understand the story of the past.

Archaeologists, classicists and historians who study these sites and time periods. Walking a forum, an amphitheatre or a frontier fort with someone who can tell you what stood where, who paid for it and what it was meant to say about Rome is a different experience from walking it alone.

Both, depending on the itinerary. Some concentrate on one civilisation, while others follow the places where they meet, which is most of the Mediterranean. Sicily is the clearest example, with Greek temples, Roman villas and Norman cathedrals within a single island.

Not at all. Whilst our itineraries include them, our real strength lies in going beyond them, bringing you to lesser-known locations, active excavations, and hidden gems you wouldn't easily find on your own. The focus is always on depth of understanding rather than ticking off famous landmarks, so you'll come away with a genuine appreciation of the history and context behind each place, well-known or otherwise.

Classical sites are usually large, open and unshaded, with uneven paving, steps and long distances between structures. Most Mediterranean and North African itineraries are timed for spring and autumn, when the walking is more comfortable. Each itinerary carries an activity level of light, moderate or active so you know what to expect before you book.

Very much so, and many guests travel solo. Shared interest naturally leads to easy conversation, and friendships formed on tour often outlast it.

Spring and autumn suit most Mediterranean itineraries, with comfortable temperatures and quieter sites. North African tours run mainly through the cooler months, and a few tours travel deliberately out of season to reach major sites without the crowds.
