Discover a continent far beyond the familiar

Our tours across the rest of Africa explore places and stories beyond the familiar. Algeria remains outside the mainstream tourist circuit, yet its classical cities preserve extraordinary layers of Numidian, Roman and Byzantine history. Among them is Timgad, where the streets still trace the precise grid of a Roman colonial town. In Tanzania, the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the shores of Lake Manyara offer exceptional birdwatching and safari country. And in South Africa’s Northern Cape, winter rains can bring carpets of spring flowers to the ground between Namaqualand’s granite outcrops, in a region rich in bulbs and succulents.

Each tour here is built around one shared interest, whether that’s archaeology, wildlife or flora, with specialists who help you read an ancient city, recognise a bird’s call or understand how plants thrive in an arid landscape.

The sweep of the Serengeti, the streets of a Roman city, Namaqualand bursting into flower: extraordinary encounters with the living world and the human past.

In Sétif, admire the exquisite Triumph of Dionysus, one of the finest mosaics to survive from the Roman world, before discovering Constantine, the extraordinary ‘City of Bridges’. Birdwatching & Wildlife Safaris in Tanzania

Birdwatching & Wildlife Safaris in Tanzania

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Serengeti National Park host over two million large mammals and approximately 500 bird species, including ostriches, secretary birds, black eagles, larks, and kori bustards. The Rift Valley’s Lake Manyara is a vital habitat for over 300 bird species, featuring three endangered Tanzanian birds: the rufous-tailed weaver, ashy starlings, and black-collared lovebirds. Its shoreline often showcases vast flocks of salmon-pink flamingos, sometimes numbering in the hundreds of thousands. Other notable birds along the lake’s floodplains include the Crowned Plover and Grey Crested Crane. Tarangire National Park boasts the highest bird species count among Tanzania’s parks, representing about a third of the country's total. Each destination offers unparalleled birdwatching opportunities amid breathtaking landscapes.

Spring Flowers of Namaqualand

For a few extraordinary weeks each spring, the landscapes of Namaqualand are transformed by winter rain, with the dry ground bursting into an astonishing carpet of flowers. Rest of Africa tours: your questions answered

Everywhere in Africa outside Egypt, Tunisia and Morocco, which have destination pages of their own. At present that means Algeria, Tanzania and South Africa.

It sees few visitors, but access to the classical sites is now easier than it has been for some years. The tour is planned around that, and the itinerary sets out what the travelling involves.

It varies by country. Algeria is best in the cooler months, and the southern African tours are timed around their own seasons, with Namaqualand flowering only in the southern spring.

Archaeological sites mean uneven, unshaded ground, and wildlife days can mean time in vehicles or walking over rough terrain. Each itinerary carries an activity level of easy, moderate or active so you know what to expect before you book.

Yes, and many guests do. Shared interest does most of the work, and conversation tends to start with whatever you have just seen.
