An island shaped by civilisations

Our Cyprus tours reveal more than 10,000 years of human stories, set against the mountains and azure waters of the Mediterranean. Prehistoric settlements, Classical cities and medieval fortresses sit remarkably close together, showing how successive civilisations shaped the island. From a relaxed base beside Kyrenia’s historic harbour, explore the Roman mosaics of ancient Soli and the dramatically positioned fortress of St Hilarion.

Alongside a specialist who knows how to read these layers, you’ll look beyond the ruins and discover the people, beliefs and cultures that made Cyprus what it is today.

On Cyprus, a mosaic floor or a fortress above the coast opens a window onto the lives of those who made the island their home.

The Archaeology of Ancient Cyprus

The Archaeology of Ancient Cyprus

There’s still time to discover in 2026. Selected departures are still available – simply call 1-800-759-7715 to find out more. The Mediterranean island of Cyprus boasts a rich prehistoric, classical, and medieval heritage. Recent research indicates that the earliest human occupation of the island dates back over 10,000 years. Over the millennia, the Cypriot people have cultivated their own unique artefacts, architecture, art and culture. With its mild spring weather, Cyprus is an ideal destination to escape the cooler climates at home, offering a comfortable environment for exploration and discovery. Key highlights include three UNESCO World Heritage sites: Khirokitia, the Archaeological Park and the Tomb of the Kings in Paphos. Additionally, visitors can explore numerous other fascinating locations, such as the legendary site where the newborn goddess Aphrodite is said to have emerged from the sea in her shell – a scene famously depicted by classical painters.

Relaxed Kyrenia

Relaxed Kyrenia

Beautiful Cyprus, traditionally the birthplace of the Goddess of love, Aphrodite, has attracted many unwanted suitors over the years. With the lovely harbour of Kyrenia serving as our base, we enjoy a leisurely tour of the archaeological sites of the north of the island, from the ancient port city of Soli with its impressive Roman mosaics to the medieval fortress of St Hilarion, perched dramatically on the Kyrenia mountain range. The landscape itself tells the story of successive civilisations all set against the backdrop of the Mediterranean's azure waters and the rugged beauty of the northern Cypriot coast.

Cyprus tours: your questions answered

Prehistoric, Classical and Medieval, often within a short distance of each other. A single site can carry several of those layers, and reading them in sequence is part of what the specialists do.

Some do. One itinerary is based at Kyrenia and explores the archaeological sites of the north at a relaxed pace.

Spring and autumn. Cypriot summers are hot for walking archaeological sites, and the shoulder seasons are considerably more comfortable as well as quieter.

Archaeological sites mean uneven ground, steps and little shade. Each itinerary carries an activity level of easy, moderate or active so you know what to expect before you book.

Yes, and many guests do. Shared interest does most of the work, and conversation tends to start with whatever you have just seen.
