Rome is one of the most charismatic and engaging of the great cities of the world, her monuments an omnipresent testament to a past in which she controlled an empire reaching from Scotland to Syria. Surprisingly, it is also an intimate city – the historic centre is small and it is easy to understand based on the ancient layout. This tour is the perfect introduction to the ‘Eternal City’ in the company of archaeologist and historians who illuminate the triumphs, tragedies and political intrigue that characterised the Roman Empire.

John Shepherd

A specialist in the study of Ancient Glass, has worked extensively in the field in Europe as an Archaeologist, including France, Italy and Bulgaria. Much of their career has been focused upon Roman Provincial Archaeology, working at the Museum of London for over 20 years.

Day 1 Rome

During the morning, we walk through the ancient centre of Rome to see the Theatre of Marcellus, preserved by its conversion into medieval tenements, the Forum and Senate House, the political heart of the capital, the Palace of Domitian, located on the Palatine Hill, and the Column of Trajan, built to commemorate his wars in Dacia. We also visit the Flavian Ampitheatre, better known as the Colosseum, the largest in Italy. In the afternoon there is free time to spend as you wish.

Day 2 Rome

A morning’s walk takes us through the Field of Mars today. A low-lying plain in the bend of the River Tiber north of the city centre, it was drained by order of Julius Caesar and developed by Augustus. The modern street system is still largely that of the Roman period. We see the Pantheon built by Hadrian with the largest unsupported dome in the world, the column of Marcus Aurelius with its reliefs of the emperor’s victories over the Germans and Sarmatians and the Stadium of Domitian, now better known as the Piazza Navona. Our walk ends at the Trevi Fountain. This afternoon is left free for private exploration.

Day 3 Rome

This morning, we head to the extraordinary church of  San Clemente to discover its underground surprises and the Domus Romane Del Celio, Roman houses which date from the 2nd century. Later, we also visit the Parco Archeologico del Celio, which opened recently. The museum houses the remaining fragments of the Forma Urbis Romae, the giant marble map of ancient Rome engraved in the 3rd century during the reign of Emperor Septimius Severus. The last time the remains of the ancient map were seen by the public was a century ago when they were on display in the garden of the Palazzo dei Conservatori on the Capitoline Hill.

Day 4 Rome

We leave Rome this morning and travel to Ostia Antica, the ancient harbour city of Rome close to the mouth of the Tiber. Originally Rome’s first colony, it became a thriving port where goods flowed into the city from every corner of the Empire. The site rivals Pompeii with some of the best-preserved Roman buildings anywhere in the world. Afterwards, depart for the airport or continue your trip at leisure.
