Let your passion lead the way

Our special interest tours are built around one pursuit, explored in depth[LI28.1] and in good company. In Shetland that means workshops with local tutors and the islands' own knitting tradition, learned from the people who keep it alive. In January it means Up Helly Aa in Lerwick, where torchlit squads parade through the streets, and a thirty-foot longship burns at the end of it. Elsewhere it means the Jacobite steam train over the Glenfinnan Viaduct, the paddle steamer Waverley and the Strathspey Line at Boat of Garten. Or Corfu in the company of the naturalist Lee Durrell, or the Mary Rose, raised from the Solent and preserved as a Tudor time capsule.

You travel with expert Tour Managers, and often with a recognised authority on the subject itself, from curators and garden writers to naturalists and specialist lecturers who have devoted their careers to the interests that bring you here.

You’ve found your subject. Now meet the people who can take you further into it.

Up Helly Aa - Shetland's Festival of Fire

Up Helly Aa - Shetland's Festival of Fire

Each January, Shetland bursts into flame as Lerwick’s Up Helly Aa brings Viking-inspired tradition, music and spectacle to the winter darkness. Watch costumed squads process through the town carrying flaming torches before the dramatic burning of a replica Viking longship, a centuries-old tradition reimagined for the modern islands. Beyond the festival, discover another side of Shetland through its remarkable archaeology, rugged landscapes and distinctive island communities. At Jarlshof, uncover 3,000 years of settlement, while journeys through Yell and Unst reveal dramatic coastlines, ancient history and the remote character of the northern isles. Visit picturesque Scalloway and learn more about Shetland’s rich past before returning to Lerwick for the unforgettable atmosphere of Up Helly Aa. With the excitement of the fire festival balanced by quieter moments of discovery, this is a fascinating winter journey into one of Britain’s most distinctive island cultures.

Special interest tours: your questions answered

The subject is narrower than a destination and more particular than a theme. Rather than touring a region and taking in what it holds, the itinerary is built around a single pursuit and goes wherever that pursuit leads, which is often somewhere you would never otherwise think to go.

Alongside your Tour Manager, many of these tours travel with a recognised authority on the subject. Tresco Abbey Garden's curator on the Cornish gardens, a garden writer in Wales, a naturalist in Corfu, a lecturer in decorative and fine arts in County Durham. On the craft tours, you also work with local tutors who have the tradition first hand.

No. The workshop-based tours are pitched to mixed abilities, complete beginners included, and the tutors are used to teaching people who have never tried before. On everything else, curiosity is the only requirement.

Often, yes. A tour built around Shetland knitting also sits under textiles, and a steam railway tour also sits under rail. The collections are different ways into the same range, so browse whichever route suits how you think about a holiday.

It varies widely, since the subject decides the day. Workshop tours involve a good deal of sitting, while island and railway itineraries can mean uneven ground, cliffs and steps. Each itinerary carries an activity level of light, moderate or active so you know what to expect before you book.

Very much so, and many guests travel solo. A tour built around one shared enthusiasm is about the easiest company there is, since everyone has arrived for the same reason and the conversation starts itself.

Earlier than most. Several of these tours are tied to a single fixed event or a short season, Up Helly Aa among them, so departures are limited and tend to go well ahead.
