A little more ground, plenty to discover

Our Moderate activity tours ask for a reasonable level of fitness. Expect walking on varied terrain, some steeper inclines and longer periods of standing. Days can be longer, with more travelling between sites than on our Light itineraries.

Most of our tours sit at this level, reflecting the walking and terrain involved in exploring archaeological sites, gardens and historic buildings.

You travel with expert Tour Managers and specialists who set a considered pace and allow time to pause, look and talk along the way.

Time on your feet, stories at every stop and good company along the way.

Pompeii, Herculaneum & Classical Campania

Pompeii, Herculaneum & Classical Campania

There’s still time to discover in 2026. Selected departures are still available – simply call 1-800-759-7715 to find out more. Learn more about Pompeii at the recently excavated villas. Nowhere in the world could give a deeper insight into Roman life than the dramatic seaside towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Before the eruption of Vesuvius, these were thriving, lively seaside towns – Pompeii, a trading town equipped with many bars, shops and brothels, while Herculaneum was an affluent elegant town. All this came to an abrupt halt, however, one autumnal day in AD 79 when Vesuvius, which had done little more than rumble for years, erupted with cataclysmic force. Two thousand years later, the sites of the Bay of Naples confront the modern visitor with a vivid, haunting immediacy like nothing else in the ancient world. In some cases, we even know the names, professions and personal histories of the people who owned the villas and shops we visit, with our expert guide lecturer illuminating the ordinary people of Pompeii, Herculaneum and beyond. This is an exciting time for visitors to these Vesuvian towns, as new discoveries are constantly being made and new houses constantly opened up. Lose yourself in the past, walking the ancient streets in the footsteps of gladiators, slaves, senators and citizens.

Moderate activity tours: your questions answered

Being comfortable walking for a few hours across a day, on uneven ground and with steps and slopes, and being happy on your feet for extended periods. It does not mean anything approaching hillwalking fitness.

More varied terrain, some steeper ground, more standing and fuller days, with more travelling between places. The subject and the guiding are identical.

Yes. The pace is considered rather than brisk, and time is allowed to pause and talk at sites. It is the cumulative length of the day rather than any single walk that makes the difference.

Itineraries vary within a tour, and your Tour Manager can often arrange for you to sit out a more demanding visit. It is worth raising in advance rather than on the day.

Yes, and many guests do. Shared interest does most of the work, and conversation tends to start with whatever you have just seen.
