The past is yours to uncover

Our archaeology tours span the whole human past. We visit the painted caves of France and the open-air rock engravings of Portugal's Côa valley, walk the Minoan palaces of Crete and enter the decorated tombs of Egypt. We explore the civilisations of Greece and Rome to the edges of their empires, discovering cities, forts and frontiers from northern Britain to the edge of the Sahara. We admire Byzantine splendour in Italy and Istanbul, trace the Vikings across their homelands, and follow in the wake of the artists, architects, philosophers, explorers and engineers who shaped the medieval world. Further afield still, we follow the Silk Road east and cross the Pacific to the moai of Easter Island.

Archaeology is a living discipline, and new discoveries continue to reshape our understanding of the past. You travel with expert Guide Lecturers: archaeologists, Egyptologists and historians who research these landscapes themselves and love sharing what they find, bringing the people, places and stories of the past to life.

From painted caves to cities lost beneath the earth, archaeology reveals the extraordinary ways people have imagined, built and understood their world.

Pompeii, Herculaneum & Classical Campania

Pompeii, Herculaneum & Classical Campania

There’s still time to discover in 2026. Selected departures are still available – simply call 1-800-759-7715 to find out more. Learn more about Pompeii at the recently excavated villas. Nowhere in the world could give a deeper insight into Roman life than the dramatic seaside towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Before the eruption of Vesuvius, these were thriving, lively seaside towns – Pompeii, a trading town equipped with many bars, shops and brothels, while Herculaneum was an affluent elegant town. All this came to an abrupt halt, however, one autumnal day in AD 79 when Vesuvius, which had done little more than rumble for years, erupted with cataclysmic force. Two thousand years later, the sites of the Bay of Naples confront the modern visitor with a vivid, haunting immediacy like nothing else in the ancient world. In some cases, we even know the names, professions and personal histories of the people who owned the villas and shops we visit, with our expert guide lecturer illuminating the ordinary people of Pompeii, Herculaneum and beyond. This is an exciting time for visitors to these Vesuvian towns, as new discoveries are constantly being made and new houses constantly opened up. Lose yourself in the past, walking the ancient streets in the footsteps of gladiators, slaves, senators and citizens.

Egypt - Land of the Pharaohs

From the Delta to the first Cataract Howard Carter’s description of his first sight into Tutankhamun tomb is also a fitting description of Andante’s exploration of the archaeology of this amazing country. Egypt is indeed a land of ‘wonderful things’, a country where adjectives are insufficient to describe the monuments and experiences which are not to be found anywhere else in the world. This epic tour encompasses all of these iconic sites and so much more, as we take a journey of a lifetime through Upper and Lower Egypt, travelling through the millennia.

Archaeology tours: your questions answered

None at all. These tours suit everyone from the merely curious to scholars and academics, and everyone in between. All that's needed is an interest in the past. Our travellers are engaging, intelligent people who lead all kinds of lives, and the atmosphere on tour is naturally informal and easy.

Expert Guide Lecturers: archaeologists, Egyptologists and historians who research and excavate in the places you're exploring. There's nothing quite like exploring a site with an archaeologist who has excavated there, or standing before prehistoric cave painting with a specialist who has spent a career studying it. They love sharing what they know, and questions are always welcome.

Itineraries are designed and planned down to the last detail, in consultation with archaeologists who know the area and supply the all-important details: the latest excavations and the special exhibitions. Having local contacts also means we are sometimes able to arrange special visits to sites not normally accessible to the public.

It varies by tour, and each itinerary carries an activity level of light, moderate or active so you know what to expect before you book. Archaeological sites often involve uneven ground, steps and open terrain, and hill and mountain sites require a reasonable level of fitness.

Very much so, and many guests travel solo. Travelling with people who share your interest in archaeology naturally leads to easy conversation, and friendships formed on tour often outlast the tour. There's no badge-wearing, roll-calling, umbrella-waving or whistle-blowing either: your tour staff are part of the group.

Yes. Wherever possible, time is built into site visits so you can wander, sketch, photograph or simply sit with a place for a while. Travelling as a group doesn't always mean moving as one.
