Tour Itinerary

Arrive into Luxembourg and en route to Trier, visit the recently re-opened villa on the outskirts of Echternach, one of the most opulent residences in the area, which originally contained up to 70 rooms. The site also features a reconstructed Roman garden. We continue to Trier where, time permitting, we have an exploratory walk after settling into our hotel.

Our exploration of Trier starts with the famous Porta Nigra, the finest surviving example of a 3rd-century Roman city gate north of the Alps, whose remarkable preservation is due to its transformation into two superimposed churches. We continue to the cathedral, the oldest church in Germany and the Cathedral Museum, with its 4th-century ceiling paintings. After lunch, we visit the Aula Palatina a gargantuan basilica, built by the Emperor Constantine as part of a palace complex. Its opulence can be gauged by the fact that one time was heated by a hypocaust system.

Day 2 Dommusik Trier

This morning, we visit the Rheinisches Landesmuseum, which contains one of the best collections of ancient artefacts in Germany. Here we find the Trier gold hoard depicting 29 members of imperial families (some of the detail is exquisite) and the Neumagen wine ship, a funerary decoration for the tomb of a wealthy wine merchant. In the afternoon we visit the Imperial Baths, whose impressive remains were built in the 4th century, and the amphitheatre, where up to 20,000 people were once entertained by bloody combat. We end the day with a wine tasting – Riesling wines cultivated in the vineyards near the Moselle are renowned for their depth of flavour yet relatively low alcohol content and are best enjoyed in the summer.

Day 3 The Imperial Baths

We drive south of Trier today, stopping on our journey to admire the Igeler Säule, a 30-metre memorial to the Secundinii, a family of cloth merchants. We proceed to the Roman Villa at Nennig, a villa rustica built along the road which connected Trier to Metz. Today, visitors can see the foundation walls of the manor house and parts of the peristyle, but it is the celebrated mosaic which graced the atrium that we especially come to see. Depicting scenes from the arena, its medallions tell the violent story of the cruel games taking place here. Our visit this afternoon is to the Roman Villa at Borg, excavated in the 1980s and reconstructed in the 1990s.

Day 4 Roman Villa of Nennig

Enjoy a day at leisure to explore Trier, with the possibility to visit the lesser-known Roman remains in Trier – the Viehmarkt Baths, restored in the late antique period and the Barbara Baths, or perhaps visit the Karl Marx birthplace museum or take a boat trip on the Moselle.

Day 4 Liebfrauenkirche in Trier

We travel to Otzenhausen Hillfort this morning at the edge of the Hunsrück Natural Park. Here we explore the Celtic roots of the region, in particular the Treveri who built this extraordinary hillfort, the largest of its kind from the Celtic World. We explore the two large circular ramparts which form part of the original structure and visit the replica Celtic village at the Keltenpark. After lunch, we drive to Otrang, an impressive Roman manor complex which included several baths, a heating system and a temple area.

Day 6 Saarland Landscape

Today we consider the archaeological history of the Moselle in Luxembourg by visiting Luxembourg National Museum of History and Art, where we find an interesting collection of remains found Dalheim (Ricciacus) and Titelberg. After some free time to enjoy the historic Old Town of Luxembourg, depart for the airport or continue your trip at leisure.
