In spring, gardens are a feast for the senses. The warming weather, blossoming flowers and buzzing bees make for a welcoming time of year. Devon in spring is a true paradise for garden enthusiasts, with the county renowned for its stunning landscapes and diverse plant life. Tulips, daffodils and hyacinths create a vibrant tapestry of colour, while the delicate blossoms of cherry trees add a touch of elegance.

On this delightful five-day tour, we explore Devon’s hidden gems, from the majestic magnolias and camellias at Coleton Fishacre to the enchanting displays of daffodils, tulips and bluebells at Forde Abbey, with each garden offering a unique and unforgettable experience.

Tour Itinerary

We depart from our pick-up points by coach and travel to Forde Abbey in the heart of Dorset, a former Cistercian monastery dating back to the 12th century. In spring, the gardens of Forde Abbey come alive with vibrant colours of daffodils, tulips and bluebells – a truly enchanting sight! The abbey's famous bog garden is not to be missed, featuring an array of moisture-loving plants. The walled garden and rockery also offer a delightful spectacle of seasonal blooms to enjoy. We continue to our comfortable accommodation at the Headland Hotel, which boasts stunning views of the English Riviera.

Following breakfast, we spend a delightful morning at National Trust – Coleton Fishacre, an idyllic nature reserve in Strawberry Valley. The farm is lovely this time of year and is renowned for its diverse collection of plants, including swathes of stunning daffodils, a glorious and welcome sight after the dark days of winter, as well as collections of magnolias, camellias, and rhododendrons, which are in full bloom during spring.
We spend the afternoon at Dartington Hall, an RHS partner garden and a stunning Grade II-listed landscape garden. In spring, the sunny borders come alive with tulips, primroses, and other seasonal flowers. The tranquil setting of the Tiltyard, with its neatly manicured lawns and water features, is a lovely spot to relax and soak in the beauty of the gardens.

The search for the best daffodil in Devon continues at our first stop of the day: RHS Rosemoor. The garden is divided into two main areas: the original garden, which features formal gardens, and the newer garden, which showcases naturalistic plantings. Highlights include the Long Borders, the Winter Garden and the stunning Rose Garden.

At this time of year, Rosemoor is a paradise of spring blooms. Daffodils in shades of buttery yellow and glowing gold sway gently in the breeze, accompanied by delicate crocuses in rich purples, soft lilacs and pure whites, their petals opening to the early spring sun. Vibrant hyacinths release their intoxicating fragrance, while cheerful tulips begin to unfurl, adding splashes of ruby red, sunset orange and blush pink. The gentle nodding heads of fritillaries, the first unfurling leaves of irises, and the fresh green shoots of alliums promise a season of breathtaking floral displays.

After breakfast, we enjoy a scenic drive along the coast to Greenway House, where we have the morning to investigate the famous estate, once a beloved holiday home of Agatha Christie, which she described as 'the loveliest place in the world'. The gardens at Greenway House are a true testament to the beauty of English landscapes. In spring, the gardens burst into life with an impressive collection of camellias, magnolias and rhododendrons. The walled garden, filled with fragrant herbs and vibrant flowers, offers a tranquil retreat. The Boathouse, nestled along the riverbank and scene of the crime in 'Dead Man’s Folly' provides stunning views and a peaceful spot to enjoy the lovely surroundings. This afternoon, we enjoy time at leisure in Torquay, taking in the beautiful seaside views or exploring the local shops and cafés.

This morning, we visit Burrow Farm Garden, often referred to as East Devon's Secret Garden, although the secret was let out of the bag somewhat when it was named The Nation's Favourite Public Garden in a competition run by The English Garden and National Garden Scheme in November 2021. Expect a mix of landscapes, including woodland, meadows and formal plantings. The Azalea Glade is particularly stunning at this time of year, with its vibrant display of azaleas and rhododendrons. The Millennium Garden, with its structured design and vibrant plantings, provides a striking contrast to the more naturalistic areas of the garden. After our visit, we re-board the coach for our journey home.
