Tour Itinerary

Arrive into Split and meet your expert Guide Lecturer and fellow travellers at your hotel.

Meals: Dinner

Accommodation: Hotel Park, Split

Today we acquaint ourselves with Split, tracing the walls and monuments of the astonishingly well-preserved and immense Palace of Diocletian, interwoven with later medieval houses. Here Diocletian, one of the few emperors to go into real retirement, cultivated his market garden and attempted, not altogether successfully, to avoid being sucked back into the power politics of the Roman world. We also visit the cathedral, where we see Diocletian’s mausoleum. Archaeological investigations here have revealed layers of religious practice spanning nearly two millennia, from Roman funeral rites to contemporary Catholic liturgy.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Accommodation: Hotel Park, Split

We continue our exploration of ancient Split, descending underground to view the Roman foundations that still support much of the modern city. Their ground-plan mimics the layout of the emperor’s chambers above them (now mostly erased by the medieval residential buildings), which aptly demonstrates the grand size of old palace. We also look at the chapel over the north gate and the baptistry, which was once a Temple of Jupiter. This afternoon is free to spend as you wish.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Accommodation: Hotel Park, Split

This morning, we drive north to visit Trilj in the Cetina River valley. Known as Tilurium in antiquity, it was once the site of an important military garrison. This formidable outpost guarded crucial Roman roads connecting the provincial capital of Salona with the interior. We see the remains of the camp and part of the Roman road. After lunch, we continue to Klis Fortress. From its 2nd century Illyrian origins, it commanded one of the most vital strategic passes in Dalmatia for millennia and throughout the early medieval period, served as a royal castle and a pivotal seat for Croatian dukes and kings.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Accommodation: Hotel Park, Split

We explore the lives of ordinary people in the Archaeological Museum, which contains artefacts from the Palaeolithic to the Iron Age. Many items from its collection are from ancient Roman settlements in Split and Salona. Our second site visit is to Salona itself. Its origins are Illyrian, but it was under Roman rule that the ancient city truly flourished. By the 1st century BCE, having sided with Julius Caesar during the Roman civil wars, it gained the status of a Roman colony, Colonia Martia Iulia Salona, and rapidly grew to become a prominent urban centre. We have a picnic lunch at this lovely site before returning to Split.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Accommodation: Hotel Park, Split

Today is free to spend as you choose. Take a fast boat to the beautiful island of Hvar and visit the seafront Franciscan monastery, visit the Maritime Museum, Mestrovic Art & Fine Art Galleries or take a stroll along Riva, Split’s iconic waterfront promenade, lined with palm trees and bustling cafés. It’s perfect for people-watching, enjoying a coffee or simply soaking in the Mediterranean atmosphere.

Meals: Breakfast

Accommodation: Hotel Park, Split

We drive to the picturesque medieval town and UNESCO World Heritage site of Trogir, where we spend the majority of the day. The street plan of the town dates back to the Hellenistic period, showing remarkable continuity in urban planning. Here, Romanesque architecture meets Venetian Renaissance and Baroque fortresses and cathedrals. Our site visits include the crown jewel of Trogir’s architectural heritage, the Cathedral of St Lawrence, which dominates the main square, and the Benedictine Convent of St Nicholas, which houses the renowned Kairos Collection, featuring a rare 3rd-century BCE Greek relief of the god of opportunity.
