Tour Itinerary

We depart by rail from London St Pancras International to Amsterdam. Upon arrival, we transfer to our hotel in Leiden and later this evening, reconvene for dinner.

Meals: Dinner

Accommodation: Golden Tulip, Leiden

This morning, we visit the Frans Hals Museum in the charming city of Haarlem. Frans Hals was a Master Dutch Golden Age painter whose portraits are greatly admired, partly due to his use of visible brushstrokes, a new technique at the time. The Laughing Cavalier is recognised as one of, if not the greatest, portrait painting produced in the Dutch Golden Age. The museum's collection includes an extensive array of Hals' portraits, which are known for their lively and spontaneous style. In addition to Hals' masterpieces, the museum houses works by notable artists from the same period, providing a comprehensive overview of Dutch art in the 17th century.

In the afternoon, we head to the oldest museum in the Netherlands for a unique glimpse into the world of art, science and natural history. The Teylers Museum also boasts an exceptional art gallery featuring works from the Dutch Romantic period, as well as masterpieces by renowned artists such as Michelangelo and Raphael.

Meals: Breakfast

Accommodation: Golden Tulip, Leiden

After breakfast, we make our way to the Mauritshuis Museum. Here, we see an outstanding collection of Dutch Golden Age paintings, including works by Vermeer, Rembrandt and Holbein. One of the museum's most famous pieces is Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring, a captivating and enigmatic portrait that has intrigued art lovers for centuries. Another highlight is Rembrandt's The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp, a striking and detailed depiction of a 17th-century medical dissection. The museum also features Holbein's Portrait of Jane Seymour, showcasing the artist's incredible skill in capturing the likeness and personality of his subjects.

Our next stop is Panorama Mesdag. This unique museum features a cylindrical painting by Hendrik Willem Mesdag, one of the most prominent painters of the Hague School. The panoramic painting, which measures 14 meters high and 120 meters in circumference, offers a 360-degree view of the Scheveningen village as it appeared in the late 19th century. Visitors can stand in the centre of the panorama and experience the illusion of being surrounded by the sea, dunes and village life, making it a truly immersive experience.

Today we visit one of the most famous art galleries in the world, the Van Gogh Museum, which houses the largest collection of Van Gogh's paintings and drawings. We explore the artist's life and work through an extensive display of his masterpieces, including the iconic Sunflowers, The Bedroom and Irises. The museum also features works by Van Gogh's contemporaries, offering a broader context of the art scene during his time. The afternoon is spent at leisure in Amsterdam.

We start the day at a hidden church called Our Lord in the Attic, located in the attic of a 17th-century canal house. The church was used by Catholics during a time when public Catholic worship was forbidden in the city.
